Black Bean Burgers

We went on a super fun trip last weekend with friends - it involved a big cabin in the woods, scary movies, and LOTS of meat.  A smoked pork butt, burgers, hot dogs, bacon, Wurst Fest - in other words, let's try to be vegetarian for a few days, shall we??
Tonight we attempted making burger patties out of black beans instead of beef!  The recipe came from Whole Foods, but I tweaked it* just a tiny bit!

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 (15 ounces) can no-salt-added black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or granules
  • red chili flakes to taste*
  • Worcestershire sauce*
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive or canola oil
  • 6 whole wheat hamburger buns
  • 6 green leaf lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1/2 small yellow* onion, thinly sliced
  • Swiss cheese*
  • BBQ sauce*
Put beans in a large bowl and mash well with a fork. Add egg, yellow onion, bread crumbs, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt, pepper, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and chili flakes. Mix well to combine then shape into 6 patties.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange patties in a single layer (working in batches, if needed) and cook, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides and cooked through, about 10 minutes total. Transfer to buns, top with condiments and serve.

Here they are mixed in a bowl and on a plate made into patties - they were a bit drier than I'd hoped for but they turned out quite tasty!

They even look like real burgers!

The patties were only 3 WW points, buns 4, Swiss cheese 3, and BBQ sauce 1 ;) Mix with your own favorite condiments and bun/cheese variations, and voila!

I think tomorrow I'll be ready to start eating meat again :)
